Did you know?
The first traffic light was installed in London in the December of 1868. It was a gas-lit system inspired by railway signalling systems and unfortunately exploded in January of 1869 from a gas leak. Thankfully, traffic lights have come a long way since then.
The first traffic lights installed in Launceston were in August of 1948. They were installed at the intersections of Brisbane & George Streets and St. John & Charles Streets and only operated between 7am and Midnight.
The Launceston City Council is currently working with State and Federal groups to upgrade the traffic signal system which will include SCATS (Sydney Coordinated ADAPTIVE Traffic System), Bluetooth, LED Signals and CCTV to monitor and adjust traffic flow and congestion.
